Assessment of Asbestos Containing Materials in Idaho Bridges
The existence of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) in bridge elements such as bearing pads, joints, abutments, concrete rails, and in some concrete coatings subject ITD to a compliance and liability issue especially when it comes to bridge renovations or demolitions. Researchers will compile available information on past test results for Idaho bridges and use that information to better understand how frequently ACMs have been found and in what products. The main objectives of this project include: (1) Reviewing available as-built plans, construction specifications, schedule sheets of the bridges identified. (2) Creating and analyzing the database of all known asbestos testing of bridges in Idaho to date, (ITD will provide access to this information). The database will report the materials’ location, quantity in square footage, condition, and recommendations to ITD personnel. All known asbestos test reports will be saved in a central location for future use. (3) Compiling and summarizing the results obtained from objectives 1, and 2 in an accessible and readable format such as an Excel spreadsheet. (4) Developing an efficient approach to sample a statistically valid set of bridges built from 1918 to 1980, which will help ITD personnel in making decisions on the ACM existence in those bridges.
