Transit Signal Progression Algorithm for Supporting Redwood Road TSP Implementation

Starting in 2016, Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) launched a project to build a full Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) corridor for connected vehicle (CV) technology testing. As an initial application, this CV deployment equipped transit vehicles with onboard processors and global positioning systems (GPS) for vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications, which can provide intelligent transit signal priority (TSP) to buses. When a bus comes into the DSRC communication range at intersections, the V2I function will gather CV information and TSP control algorithms will be activated if the bus is behind its schedule. TSP has great potential to reduce bus delay at intersections, improve transit operational reliability, and consequently increase transit ridership with the improved service. However, an activated TSP control may also bring negative impacts to the intersection traffic due to changed signal timings (e.g., red truncation, green extension, phase insertion). In this project, the research team will assist UDOT to conduct an in-depth system evaluation. Based on the analysis of data from various datasets, the first goal of this project is to examine the system performance before and after signal retiming in the summer of 2018. Another primary goal is to develop a visualization platform that can assist UDOT in designing signal progression plans to benefit both buses and passenger vehicles.
