Experimental Validation of a Rapid Assessment Tool for Pile Capacity and Stability in Response to Scour Situations

Rapid assessment of pile capacity is often necessary during scour events and requires quick judgment by the rating engineer. A previously completed research project developed a rapid pile assessment tool to determine capacity based upon variables such as encasement length, unbraced pile lengths and pile size. The rapid assessment tool was not verified with experimental data, however, and is thus the goal of the project proposed here. This project includes the completion of laboratory tests which incorporate variables of interest, a subsequent validation of the rapid assessment tool results for the tested scenarios, and a final report summarizing the findings. The previously mentioned rapid pile assessment tool was developed and verified using provisions and theoretical modeling approaches. There was not, however, experimental data to validate the tool’s results. The main objective of this proposed research project is to validate the tool’s findings to ensure accurate pile capacity determination, both for bare piles and those encased in concrete.
