Connected Autonomous Vehicles: Safety During Merging and Lane Change and Impact on Traffic Flow

In this project, Dr. Ioannou plans to address safety and mobility associated with connected autonomous vehicles during merging and lane change maneuvers. In particular, he plans to develop: • A real time algorithm for calculating safe spacing for lane changes and merging • Protocol of negotiating the creation of safety spacing in the destination lane • Execution of the maneuver in time and space in a way that minimizes impact on traffic flow • Perform microscopic simulation experiments to assess impact on traffic flow and environment
