Field Testing of Non-Motorized Road User Accommodations for Work Zones

The objective of this project is to verify the user acceptance and field performance of several innovative solutions for work zone pedestrian accommodations. To maximize relevance to practitioners, all of the materials and equipment will be selected in close collaboration with the SWZDI Board and Technical Advisory Committee (TAC). Devices will be pre-tested under controlled conditions at a “pedestrian test track” (PTT) that has no motorized traffic. Designs and equipment that survive this step will then be tested under real-world conditions, including winter endurance testing where possible. Pedestrian accommodation attributes such as durability and user acceptance will be evaluated through the testing. The non-motorized road user accommodation devices and techniques to be tested will be determined in close collaboration with the SWZDI Board of Directors and Technical Advisory Committee.
