Capacity and Cost Benefits of Super 2 Corridors

Based on 2004 traffic volumes, supporting background information for TxDOT Research Project 0-6135, "Super 2 Design for Higher Traffic Volumes," indicated that there are over 4,200 miles of two-lane rural highway on the state highway system that have average daily traffic counts (ADTs) greater than 5,000. Given the increase in statewide traffic since that time, the number of two-lane highway segments with high ADTs has increased further, providing additional candidates for sites that would benefit from Super 2 installations. This project will test that the use of a Super 2 treatment on a two-lane rural highway with high ADT provides capacity benefits approaching those of a four-lane alignment, but at greatly reduced costs.
