Increasing Safety of Winter Weather Operations

Snow plowing operations for TxDOT maintenance crews is an extremely dangerous job. Typically, during non-snow operations, when working on a section of roadway performing a moving operation, a truck mounted attenuator (TMA) is used to protect the work crew. During plowing operations, TMAs are not used because all the trucks are being used in snow plowing operations. There have been numerous occasions when snow plow trucks have been hit in the rear, causing injury to the employee driving the truck. Statewide, there are different methods that various districts and maintenance sections use to make their snow plow trucks visible to the traveling public. Some use special strobe lights, while others mount signs on the back of the V-box. Research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of the various types of devices that can be used on the snow plow trucks in order to make them more visible to the traveling public in order to increase the safety of TxDOT snow plow drivers and the traveling public. This project seeks to [1] Gather data on what each district is currently doing to bring attention to the snow plow trucks. [2.] Determine if other devices that could be used have not been tried before. [3.] Perform an evaluation to determine which device or set of devices have the most visibility in the snow, which devices do not get covered with snow during operation, and which devices best get the attention of the traveling public. [4] Develop recommendations for TxDOT maintenance crews to use.
