Synthesis of Precast Column Designs for Texas Bridges

There is an increasing interest in prefabricated bridge construction to reduce construction time, minimize traffic disruptions and environmental impact, and improve construction quality and durability. Prefabricated elements have been used in bridge superstructures for many years. Precast concrete bent cap systems have also been developed and implemented in Texas bridges. The use of an entirely precast substructure, including columns, can contribute to an even greater reduction of construction time and disruptions. However, the use of prefabricated elements for columns has been very limited as compared to superstructures or bent caps. While a number of studies have been conducted on precast column connections, there is currently a lack of standard, validated designs for the practical implementation of precast concrete column systems in Texas bridges. Project objectives are: [1.] Conduct a state-of-the-art of national research and construction projects related to precast columns. [2.] Target criteria for the selection and rejection of precast columns over conventional columns, as well as advantages and disadvantages between existing precast column systems. [3.] Compile lessons learned from previous precast column projects.
