Evaluating Effective Asphalt Content (AC) in Cold In-Place Recycling Mixtures

Benefits from this research include 1) a better understanding of effective asphalt content (AC) used in the cold in-place recycling (CIR) process under variable weather conditions; 2) understanding/qualifying the benefits of mix designs and process control for CIR; 3) better understanding how to relate mix design information to adjustments made in the field; 4) clarity for agencies to properly specify the process and materials for specific projects. These benefits are important for the advancement and increased use of CIR as a valuable tool to address agency rehabilitation needs. Currently there are no methods or performance specifications to address binder content changes outside the mix design parameters. Performance testing and better specifications to be developed from this research will assure more successful projects. Fracture Energy measures allowing the comparison of performance characteristics of various emulsion contents used in CIR will also provide key information for the agencies mix design protocol and subsequent field adjustments. End users of this research will be all agencies that desire to utilize CIR as a rehabilitation alternative. Implementation of this research will facilitate renewed and wider use of CIR. Wider and more successful use of CIR will capture the cost, environmental and performance advantages that it offers compared to standard practices.
