Law Enforcement Support for High Visibility Enforcement
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is conducting a study on law enforcement support for High Visibility Enforcement (HVE). It will assess whether State Highway Safety Office officials believe there has been a change in support for HVE among law enforcement over the past ten years. The study also will document any innovative strategies being used by State or local law enforcement agencies to promote the use of HVE. The study involves two separate sets of interviews. Interviews with State officials will determine if these officials believe there has been a change in support for HVE among law enforcement in the past ten years, the kinds of HVE activities carried out in their States, and, if they believe there has been a change in support for HVE, the reasons for such a change. Law enforcement officials who are familiar with noteworthy or innovative strategies being used in their jurisdictions to increase law enforcement participation in HVE will be identified and interviewed. Innovative strategies may be new initiatives or previously used ideas which have been re-implemented, re-branded, or re-energized and are expected to go beyond just offering overtime hours. A final report summarizing the results of the interviews will be shared with States and other stakeholders to improve support for and encourage implementation of HVE.
