Noise Wall Overhang Design

The Ohio Department of Transportation currently builds noise walls to typical heights of between 12 and 16 feet. Research is needed to determine if a community's noise reductions and air pollutant levels can be improved with a roadway side overhang modification to an existing noise wall. The results of this research may justify the need for a change in the current noise barrier specification (NDS-1-09) and to the noise manual. The goal is to improve savings on noise wall design while improving noise reduction and air pollutant reduction to the communities behind the wall. The objective of Phase 1 of this research is to gain knowledge of noise wall overhang design options, including cost comparisons.
