Using Medical X-Ray Machines to Determine the Service Life of Concrete

This project will determine the feasibility of using medical x-ray machine to determine the fluid penetration and thereby diffusion coefficient to help predict the service life of field concrete. A prototype x-ray device will be developed and evaluated on field concrete. Work in Stage 1 will focus on evaluating the medical X-ray machine (used by dentists) to determine the rate of iodine penetration into the cement paste, mortar, and concrete specimens. A software package will be developed using raw data from the medical x-ray machine to determine the rate of iodine penetration into the test samples. The software will have a user interface and provide a simple output of parameters such as the ion diffusion coefficient and the surface concentration level. A prototype x-ray device will be developed based on the requirements of the medical x-ray machine employed in this research as well as considering the availability and versatility of the components and cost. Work in Stage 2 will investigate concrete specimens from several field sites from Virginia, Oklahoma, and possibly Minnesota. The final report will provide all data and test results along with guidelines for using the prototype x-ray device and plans for its implementation and commercialization.
