A non-sensor solution for effective and inexpensive parking management: payment, reservation, and dynamic pricing

In this project, a non-sensor based parking management system with its relevant theory is proposed. Comparing to traditional on-street parking management schemes, the proposed system is more advantageous in the following ways: (1) Providing better estimates for real-time parking occupancy without deploying sensors; (2) Applying dynamic parking rates based on both demand and supply; (3) Offering day-ahead parking reservations via mobile or web; (4) Enabling convenient and straightforward parking payment with minimal system investment; and (5) Allowing cheap and efficient parking enforcement. This novel parking management system will be deployed and tested on the Morewood parking lot on CMU campus. This project engages the Transportation and Parking Services of CMU in the first year, which holds great potential to scale and future deployment. If successful, the research team will aim for deployment in other public or private parking locations.
