Evaluate New Equipment or Technology Available for Roadside Fleet Repair

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) currently maintains a fleet of 1600 trucks statewide. These trucks are the backbone of the department's work force. Providing snow and ice removal during the winter and hauling a variety of materials during the summer. The ODOT mechanic is responsible for maintaining this fleet in working condition year round. They have several tools at their disposable but are looking to identify new equipment or technology to enhance roadside operations for dump truck repair, equipment repair (back hoe, loader, tractor), and heavy equipment (grader). At this time in order to provide mechanical assistance there is a struggle to get a bottle jack under a dump truck out on the road with a flat tire. Many times a delay in service happens because a wrecker is needed raise up the truck so the tire can be repaired. Tractor tires are large and heavy currently roadside repairs for tractors aren't a possibility because of the size. Several areas of fleet repair are not addressed because of inadequate tools when working with the variety of equipment maintained in the ODOT fleet. This research will evaluate the current equipment in ODOT's fleet and provide recommendations on available equipment and technology to do these repairs providing an extensive cost benefit analysis and return on investment. The overall goal of the project is to provide ODOT mechanics with the ability to perform tasks along the roadside with the maximum amount of safety and efficiency possible.
