Decongesting America’s Cities, Regions and Megaregions: Finding Solutions to Metropolitan Congestion

This proposed 18-month research project will address the challenge of how to reverse the growth of congestion that is congealing freeways, highways, and city streets across the United States. Innovations in shared mobility, automated vehicles, automated tolling and dynamic pricing systems, “big data” systems, and innovative governance and finance systems may be the breakthrough in managing urban, metropolitan and megaregional traffic congestion. This will require the integration of these technologies into a comprehensive metropolitan congestion reduction system, which no US city has yet been able to do. This proposed system can also help achieve a broad range of other public policy concerns facing metropolitan America. These could include reducing growing inequity, carbon production, and energy consumption, and promoting more efficient development patterns.
