Synthesis of Information Related to Highway Practices. Topic 50-02. Highway Hydraulic Engineering State of Practice

In 2012, the Federal Highway Administration published Highway Hydraulics State of Practice, a snapshot of highway hydraulic engineering policies and practices in state departments of transportation (DOTs). This document provided a comprehensive review of highway hydraulic engineering policies, which vary widely from state to state. The objective of this synthesis is to document significant changes that state DOTs have made over the past decade to their hydraulic engineering policies. The study will also examine the trends and factors driving these changes. The scope is limited to hydraulic engineering; hydrology is not included. Information will be gathered through literature review, survey of state DOTs, collection and analysis of relevant DOT hydraulic engineering policies, and interviews with selected agencies for case examples. Knowledge gaps and suggestion for research to address those gaps will be identified.
