Research for AASHTO Standing Committee on Highways. Task 417. Reorganization and Strategy to Update the AASHTO Drainage Manual

Nine years passed before the 2005 AASHTO Model Drainage Manual was updated in 2014. Material in the AASHTO Drainage Manual often lags behind due to the amount of effort required to update the complete AASHTO Drainage Manual. Federal rule making such as the Chesapeake Bay Executive Order and the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement are recent examples that impact drainage policy and design. Resiliency in transportation infrastructure due to extreme weather events is an emerging concern and efforts are underway to address design methodology at FHWA and the AASHTO TCHH. Incorporation of LRFD scour design methodology and incorporation of two-dimensional hydraulic modeling are other examples of emerging impacts on drainage policy and design. Research is needed to investigate the potential for creating several smaller publications out of the larger AASHTO Drainage Manual and the Highway Drainage Guidelines. This reorganization will permit faster implementation of AASHTO drainage publications and will improve the TCHH's timeliness in creating updates to smaller, more manageable publications. The objective of this research is to determine a logical reorganization of the AASHTO Drainage Manual chapters for future publication in publications that are smaller, more manageable, and stand-alone. It is expected that groups of like chapters and information will be consolidated or combined into a section able to be published as a stand-alone document.
