Autonomous Vehicle Feasibility Study (NDOT ###-##-803)

Nearly fifty cities around the globe have been piloting autonomous vehicles; furthermore, the U.S. Department of Transportation has designated its own pilot sites for the study and research of autonomous vehicles. To date, these pilots have focused primarily on demonstrating the feasibility of various self-driving features; however, most of these pilots have been conducted under the supervision of a professional driver. The objective of this study is to determine the potential ridership and design standard requirements of a dedicated autonomous vehicle facility in the state of Nevada. The facility, which could potentially be the first of its kind in North America, would focus primarily on the reduction of construction costs by inhibiting heavy duty truck or bus usage, yet would incorporate both autonomous vehicle and commercial vehicle roadside technology. The study also seeks to assess lane and bridge options and configurations, technological infrastructure, and potential costs and benefits for the development of the facility. In addition, the study will examine and begin to initiate the development of a Public Private Partnership, in order to determine the best manner of funding for construction of the facility.
