I-94 Connected Vehicles Testbed Operations and Maintenance

The Roadway Safety Institute (RSI) funded the creation of the I-94 Connected Vehicles Testbed as an addition to the existing I-94 Field Laboratory of the Minnesota Traffic Observatory. The testbed upgrade introduced the ability within the existing surveillance and data collection infrastructure to collect detailed vehicle trajectories from seven 24GHz radar covering the westbound I-94 high-crash-frequency area in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. The radar infrastructure has been complemented by a back-office system that collects vehicle trajectories in real time, stores them, and makes the data available to any external applications through a provided application user-interface. Developing the CV testbed to provide such information from a busy and difficult-to-access freeway was challenging and required many customized hardware and software solutions. Both the continuous operation of the I-94 Field Lab—and now the CV testbed—involves many layers of technology that require constant monitoring and frequent maintenance. Though most of these expenses have been covered by RSI and MnDOT projects, there are ongoing costs and periods with no projects utilizing the testbed infrastructure. This project covers the effort to secure the uninterrupted operation of the testbed, and it performs changes and upgrades in view of the large MnDOT reconstruction project, which started in April 2018 and required relocation of two (of seven) radar stations.
