Development of a Course on Automated Vehicle Technologies

This study focuses on the development of a professional course on automated vehicle technologies designed for an audience of state, county, and local transportation professionals. The goal of the course is for attendees to better understand topics related to vehicle automation, including enabling technologies (e.g. GPS/GNSS, radar, LIDAR, cameras, communication, etc.), controls and sensor fusion, and application-level algorithms such as localization and guidance. The course will be designed as a multi-day professional course and will include classroom-based lectures as well as field-based workshop/laboratory exercises. Lecture material will cover foundational topics such as operating principles of sensors and the fundamentals of guidance algorithms. Laboratory exercises will focus on the demonstration of and participant interaction with a small unmanned ground vehicle (i.e. a mobile robot). This will serve as a platform for experimenting with different sensors and algorithms to see how they affect system performance in a real-world vehicle. The content will be designed to ensure it is interesting, informative, and applicable for the audience. The project seeks to bridge the gap between academia and real-world practitioners expressing an interest in learning more about these technologies.
