Optimal RWIS Sensor Density and Location - Phase II

The primary objective of this follow-on project is to improve the previous method by incorporating a complete set of analysis domains - space and time, and apply it to a larger number of case studies for more general location guidelines. In particular, the research has the following specific objectives: 1. Develop location and density optimization models and solutions for all other members of Aurora that were not covered in the previous project; 2. Extend the methodology to account both spatial and temporal attributes of road weather and surface conditions; 3. Develop an empirical optimal density model and related guidelines based on results for all topographic-climate zones in central North America; 4. Evaluate the effects of spatial demarcation on Road Weather Information System (RWIS) planning, and examine the implications of RWIS deployment at different geographical/jurisdictional levels (e.g., leveraging the RWIS stations in neighbor states/provinces); and 5. Integrate the developed solutions into LORWIS (www.lorwis.com) - a prototype web-based RWIS location visualization platform for demonstrating the proposed models and the resulting solutions. The system will be made available to Aurora members for a two year period after completion of the project. Phase II of the project involves five key components including data collection and processing, quantification of underlying spatial and temporal structures of road surface conditions (RSCs), analysis of optimal solutions generated, and visualization of location solutions. 1. Collection, processing, and compilation of required data; 2. Investigation of spatiotemporal characteristics of road weather condition factors; 3. Evaluation of the leveraging effect of existing RWIS stations in neighboring regions; 4. Development of an enhanced empirical optimal density model; 5. Visualization of RWIS location solutions and road weather summary maps; and 6. Final Report.
