Developing Vehicle Speed Profiles for Typical Kansas Work Zones with a Lane Shift after Advanced Warning

This research will focus on investigating Kansas work zones where vehicle speed is required to decrease prior to the work zone merge (or lane drop), and then proceed next to the work zone activity (as shown in KDOT TE744). Prior to the full lane drop and in the buffer space, vehicles may be presented with a hazard which could result in a crash if speed are not in compliance with the posted work zone speed limit. The ability to slow vehicles down and maintain a slow speed through the entire length of the work zone will benefit not only the driver with an increase in situational awareness, but also the construction
