Understanding Overweight/Oversize Freight Flow and Safety in Kansas Using KTRIPS

The research team will be guided by the following tasks which reflect the team’s current thinking about how best to approach the study objectives. The team will adjust tasks as new information becomes available as the project progresses and to reflect input from the KDOT project monitor. • Task 1. Literature Search: The research team will conduct a literature search focusing on overweight / oversized truck safety, especially with unique or common geometric issues with roadways. Kansas State University has conducted two research studies for KDOT in the past ten years which will serve as a basis for this investigation (Russell et al. 2012 and 2013). • Task 2. Midwest Survey of DOTs: The research team will conduct a regional survey of State DOTs as to whether policy or guidance is in place for routing overweight / oversize trucks safely, or what kind of permitting system is used. Additionally, the research team plans to reach out to companies that commonly haul overweight / oversize loads in Kansas to gain knowledge of how they commonly route loads. • Task 3. KTRIPS investigation: The research team will work with KDOT to collect the backend of the KTRIPS database and perform descriptive statistics and mapping of the loads and common routes. The research team expects commonality with the results of the study which will be the basis for Task 4.
