High Friction Surface Treatment Material Monitoring

Evaluate Experimental Feature Project of 28 new High Friction Surface Treatment (HFST) sites constructed in 2016 throughout Central Region. Project to monitor and collect data for each site annually post-construction for material wear, operations, and pavement condition as compared to control sites. At the end of evaluation period, a synopsis will be provided that will make recommendations on the use of HFST in Alaska. It also will contain information concerning what pitfalls or construction/maintenance issues to resolve with improved specifications, construction plans and practices.

  • Supplemental Notes:
    • August data collection for third and final year scheduled. Final report still anticipated at end of year. Urban areas wearing faster than rural areas. High friction not recommended in urban high traffic areas based on the wear rate
