Evaluation of Different Paint Systems for Over-Coating Existing Structural Steel

The lack of alternative over coating paint systems presents a challenge in maintaining a state of good repair for bridges constructed using painted structural steel elements. The goals and objectives of this project are the following: (1) Evaluate current New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) corrosion maintenance and paint system evaluation practices; (2) Identify alternatives to current epoxy mastic paint systems; (3) Identify and evaluate other states’ practices; (4) Identify and evaluate over coating paint system formulations; (5) Develop a testing program to evaluate system performance; (6) Test systems using the testing program and make recommendations about each system based on the test results; and (7) If deemed necessary, re-develop the standard specifications to include other coatings of equal or superior performance.
