Developing a New Barrier Condition Index (BCI) to Optimize Barrier Improvement in Wyoming

This study is set up to evaluate the conditions of barrier systems in Wyoming. Improvement recommendations will be provided and optimized for each barrier system (segment) to upgrade the performance of the barriers in a cost effective way. The information from this project will be used to compare the condition of barriers with the recent design alignments published by Roadside Design Guide (RDG) (AASHTO 2011), NCHRP report 656 (NCHRP 2010) and other valid references. Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) shall be able to develop crash modification factors (CMFs) for barriers and the relationship between safety performance (severity of crashes), and the barrier condition can be predicted using regression modeling to estimate the benefits of improvement. WYDOT will receive a life cycle analysis for the barriers.
