Multi-Criteria Hazmat Routing on Rail with Railroad-Highway Crossing Considerations
This project develops analytical models for integrated operational planning and routing of hazardous materials (hazmat) by railroad carriers. Hazmat transportation planning has cost, time and safety aspects and this project will develop multi-criteria optimization based decision support tools for railroad carriers to plan hazmat shipments. The optimization models will explicitly consider the railroad-highway crossings along the potential routes of the hazmat shipments as railroad-highway crossings are multi-modal points with critical safety risks. The project team has expertise in multi-criteria optimization, decision support tools and simulation, and risk analysis; and application of these disciplines in transportation safety, operational planning and management, especially, in railroad transportation safety and operations. The project promotes hazmat transportation safety by providing tools to enable safer hazmat routing considering railroad-highway crossings.
