Evaluation of an Automatic, Individual, Computer-Based Operator Education and Training Program

Research has consistently shown that risky driving behaviors and operator error are the critical reasons in the vast majority of vehicle crashes. One proven method to reduce these risky behaviors is the combination of onboard safety monitoring systems with operator coaching/training. This project will evaluate the ability of Predictive Coach’s innovative driver training delivery method to reduce risky driving behavior. Predictive Coach uses data from an onboard safety monitoring system (OSM) to monitor operator behavior and automatically assign relevant, individualized operator training as needed. The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) team will partner with RMJ Technologies and the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) to test the efficacy of Predictive Coach and potentially advance its application to transit bus operators. Specifically, this study will answer the following three research questions: (1) What are the safety benefits (i.e., reduction in frequency of risky driving behaviors) of Predictive Coach? (2) Are there any unintended side effects associated with the use of Predictive Coach? (3) What are managers’ and operators’ perceptions and opinions of the automated training? If successful, the benefits and payoffs of Predictive Coach will be improved safety through a reduction in crashes related to risky driving. Bus transit fleets will also experience reduced liability through a reduction in potential willful negligence related to managers that ignore the data provided to them via reports from OSM systems. Finally, fleets will experience increased efficiency through more fuel-efficient driving, reduced fuel costs, improved vehicle maintenance, and improved overall passenger experience.
