Automated Route Optimization Planning for Maryland Condition Assessment
Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) conducts an annual condition assessment that covers one third of the highway system. The routing of the sampled half-mile roadway segments is done manually. Many labor-hours are spent that could be better used to improve the timely-reporting of programs, such as, fiscal, targets, maintenance planning, tangible results, along with analysis like life-cycle analysis. The research is to develop a stand-alone geographic information systems (GIS) tool to route the condition assessment trips using a simple sampling process. Ideally, it could also be applied to salt routes, ARAN truck routing, and CHART patrol routing. Incorporation into the MDOT SHA Enterprise GIS will be considered.
