Guidance on Active Work Zone Data Archival

Ultimately, the goal of this project is to identify best practices in active work zone data collection and archiving. Based upon theses practices, recommendations will be provided as to a prototype application that can be broadly used by state departments of transportation (DOTs) to effectively archive work zone data. Under this broad goal, the specific objectives of this project are to: (1) Investigate current data collection techniques used on highway construction and maintenance sites; (2) Examine methods by which agencies collect and disseminate data regarding lane closures and other pertinent information to the traveling public; (3) Assess the degree to which various data streams can be integrated and identify potential obstacles to data utilization from the perspective of state DOTs; and (4) Design a conceptual prototype tool based on effective record-keeping practices and recommendations that can be used to measure work zone performances and evaluate strategies to address the safety and operational impacts of work zones. Tasks include: Task 1. Develop and Convene Technical Advisory Committee (TAC); Task 2. Conduct Literature Review; Task 3. Develop Survey; Task 4. Conduct Survey; Task 5. Analyze Survey Results; Task 6. Meet with TAC; Task 7. Develop conceptual prototype and research report; and Task 8. Finalize conceptual prototype and research report.
