Transportation Research Synthesis: High Friction Surface Treatments

A Transportation Research Synthesis has been requested on the use of high-friction surface treatment (HFST) by other states. This has been identified by Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) as a safety strategy, but State and local road agencies have not yet implemented HFST and want to understand other states' rationales, techniques, materials, successes and failures with HFST and similar strategies in reducing crashes. A survey targeted toward Department of Transportations (DOTs) in states similar in climate to Minnesota and/or making heavy use of HFST will ask about what rationale is used to determine when they use a surface treatment, what particular problems this use is intended to address, what materials they use or have used, and how well the configurations they have used have worked in reducing crashes, injuries and fatalities.
