2282 - Vehicle Classification and Bluetooth MACs for Origin-Destination Measurements

This project proposes developing a new device that integrates two systems— namely magnetometer classification and Bluetooth (BT) identification—for monitoring route choices per vehicle class, as well as targeting system deployment and demonstration. Overall system implementation consists of one BT identification/vehicle classification unit deployed at an Oklahoma port of entry, as well as a number of BT identification stations deployed at various locations across Oklahoma’s roadways. Objectives: The study includes BT/class prototype design, BT-vehicle assignment algorithm development, system deployment, and accuracy analysis of detected BT vehicle assignments. Work Plan: B1. Highway Segmentation and Sensor Layout B2. BT-Vehicle Assignment Algorithms and Case Studies of Assignment Uncertainties B3. BT-Vehicle Assignment Accuracy Enhancement Methods Anticipated Benefits: Upon a successful implementation of this proposed project, ODOT will gain significant travel information per vehicle class. Implementation: Develop an origin/destination (O/D) and travel times (TT) measurement per vehicle class composed of BT sniffer wirelessly integrated with a magnetometer vehicle classifier. Implementation will include workshops, publications, and presentations. Expected Deliverables: • BT/class system design • methods and algorithms to assign BT identifications to corresponding vehicles • system accuracy analysis and discussion about results • proposed methods to improve system accuracy • O/D and TT measurements Time Schedule: The research activities during the first project year will focus on constructing the BT/Class station and developing BT-vehicle assignment algorithms. System deployment, field study, and performance analysis will be conducted during the second project year.
