Quick Response Research on Long-Term Strategic Issues. Task 25. Broadening Understanding of the Interplay between Public Transit, Shared Mobility, and Personal Automobiles

Several important opportunities have arisen to expand the scope of Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) J-11/Task 21 by drawing on important new data sources.  These additional data sources have the potential to build on the findings presented in  TCRP Report 188: Shared Mobility and the Transformation of Public Transit.  The new data sources  will build on the methodology already developed regarding the interplay of transit, shared-use mobility—ridesourcing in particular—and the private automobile. This will help inform the guidance, pilot projects, and other work to be accomplished by a number of transit agencies and federal programs going forward.  The new data sources include: (1) Transportation Network Companies (TNC) trip data. Hourly origin-destination TNC trip data for five regions (Chicago, Los Angeles, Nashville, Seattle and Washington, DC) provided by a major TNC, . The nature and format of the TNC trip data is described in Appendix A, and summaries of the data for each of the five regions is provided in Appendix B. (2) Shared Mobility Survey. A survey of more than 10,000 transit and other shared mobility users in eight metropolitan areas administered by the researchers. This survey and its results are referred to as the Shared Mobility Survey throughout this report. The survey is discussed in more detail in Section IV and Appendices D and E. (3) Four-Agency survey.  Transit rider surveys about TNC use administered by public transit agencies in Atlanta, the Bay Area, New Jersey, and Washington, DC. This survey, referred to throughout the report as the Four-Agency Survey, is discussed in detail in Section IV and the instrument is presented in Appendix F.
