Lateral Analysis Guidelines for Drilled Shafts in Nevada Based on LRFD Framework (NDOT 608-17-803)

The AASHTO LRFD specifications from 2014, the AASHTO 2015 and 2016 interim revisions, and the AASHTO LRFD Seismic Guide Specifications, offer only vague guidance on the lateral stability requirements and analytical modeling techniques for deep foundations. Deep foundations consist of two primary types: drilled shafts and driven piles. Due to the extensive research involved in studying both of these deep foundation types, this research project is focused solely on drilled shafts. In determining the lateral resistance of deep foundations, AASHTO recommends the use of p-y curves, or strain-wedge theory, in order to model the load-deflection behavior of soil. Simplified methods for analytically modeling deep foundations exist; however, these methods have their limitations and drawbacks. Several state Departments of Transportation have developed improved guidelines for the design of deep foundations under lateral loads; unfortunately, these guidelines are not compatible with the design practice in Nevada regarding the shaft diameter. In order to account for local soil conditions, design practices, and foundation dimensions commonly encountered within the state of Nevada, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) must develop design guidelines containing appropriate recommendations for lateral analysis and lateral stability. A reliable method is needed to ensure accurate, economical, and safe deep foundation designs, specifically relating to drilled shafts; the method must also ensure uniformity in the design approach, while achieving the desired lateral performance. Since it is critical for NDOT to develop a robust and enhanced design methodology to carry out LRFD of large diameter drilled shafts, the objective of this research is to develop a design guide for LRFD of drilled shafts under lateral loading.
