An Empirical Analysis of the Impact of Smart, Connected Navigation Systems on Traffic Congestion

The objective of the proposed project will be to empirically analyze how the use of smart, connected navigation technologies affects traffic flow and congestion within Los Angeles. This project will be carried out in collaboration with the City of Los Angeles and the Data Science Federation run by the City. The City of Los Angeles has a partnership with Waze and collects information about all trips taken by drivers that use the Waze App. The City of Los Angeles also tracks information about the flow and congestion of traffic on the roads, allowing the capture of information about traffic when the Waze app is not being used. Combining these datasets allows researchers to analyze how the use of navigation apps is affecting traffic flow and congestion within the city of Los Angeles, identifying situations where smart, automated technologies are reducing traffic congestion and when they are increasing traffic congestion within the city. This project will require considerable time and effort in cleaning, combining and analyzing the Waze data along with the City traffic data. For that reason, the grant asks for funding to cover the expenses of a graduate research assistant or a PhD student that would work on this project along with the expenses for several undergraduate research assistants.
