Development of Mix Design and Structural Design Procedures for Cold In-Place Recycling (NDOT 643-15-803)

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) uses cold in-place recycling (CIR) to rehabilitate a significant portion of the Nevada state road network. A well designed and constructed CIR, which eliminates the need for costly re-construction of road sections, has proven to be highly effective in reducing reflective cracking from previously existing cracked asphalt pavement. CIR utilizes the existing highly distressed asphalt concrete (AC) layer, thereby eliminating the need for its removal, and eliminating the need for unnecessary disposal of its valuable natural products, including aggregates and asphalt binder. Over the past decade, NDOT has made significant progress toward the implementation and incorporation of CIR technology in various parts of the state; however, the current methods for mix and structural design when incorporating CIR must be updated to include the latest technological advancements in pavement and material engineering. Furthermore, NDOT is in need of a guide that explains when an asphalt overlay or a maintenance activity should be applied over a CIR layer. This research study will develop a performance-based mix design guide for CIR, will conduct life cycle cost analysis, and will develop a structural design guide for overlay over CIR.
