Determining Placement Areas Sustainability

Placement areas for dredged material from the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) are a responsibility of the State of Texas. Given population and industrial growth along the coastline and the continual need for dredging, it is important to use the sites efficiently and ensure their integrity. The researcher team will identify an area on the GIWW where placement areas are in danger of being breached by erosion, wave energies, or navigation activities. This will be done by consulting users, state agencies, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Using this as a test case, the researcher team will develop a process for identifying measures to be taken that will mitigate against these influences, thereby extending the life of placement areas, reducing the frequency and/or amount of dredging, and enhancing navigational safety. The researcher team will incorporate the lessons learned into the development of a decision tool that can be used to evaluate other sections of the GIWW in a similar manner and develop measures and strategies that will maximize the life and holding capacity of placement areas.
