Synthesis of Load-Deflection Characteristics of Laterally Loaded Large Diameter Drilled Shafts

Piles with diameter up to twelve (12) feet (ft) are used increasingly for bridges and other structures. The p-y curves approach is the current design approach for horizontally loaded piles; this approach has been calibrated against load tests on piles which were typically one foot (1ft) to two feet (2ft) in diameter. The significant difference between the diameter of the piles that were used to calibrate the design rules and the diameter of the piles currently used brings to question the validity of the current design rules for large five feet to twelve feet (5ft to 12ft) diameter piles subjected to horizontal loading. This project will consist of: (1.) Collecting as many horizontal load tests on large diameter piles (5ft to 12ft). To that end, the researcher team has contacted 10 people in 4 different countries and has identified about ten (10) load tests on large piles. The researcher team will attempt to find more load tests by contacting the International Association of Foundation Drilling (ADSC), the Deep Foundation Institute (DFI), and the Pile Driving Contractors Association (PDCA) and through a survey of departments of transportation (DOTs). (2.) Using the p-y curve approach to make standard predictions, (3.) Comparing the predictions with the measurements and repeating this process for a few smaller diameter piles to document the influence of the diameter. (4.) Suggest the best approach(es) for the design of large diameter piles subjected to horizontal loads.
