Analysis of 54-Inch Tall Single Slope Concrete Barrier on a Structurally Independent Foundation

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), also referred to as TxDOT, requires bridge columns adjacent to roadways that exceed specific annual traffic frequency to be designed for impacts from heavy trucks, or be shielded with a barrier. The barrier needs to be on a structurally independent foundation that should be fifty-four (54) inches tall and must pass MASH Test Level 5 (TL-5) testing requirements. Currently, there is no 54-inch tall barrier that meets MASH TL-5 criteria on a structurally independent foundation, nor is there a method to design such a barrier. In this project, the researcher team will develop several concepts of the 54-inch tall single slope barrier on structurally independent foundations. These concepts will include shallow footing, drilled shaft footing, wall type footing, or other combination footing. Of these preliminary design concepts, TxDOT will select three foundation concepts for further development. The researcher team will develop simulation models of the selected designs and perform dynamic vehicle impact simulations to determine appropriate impact loads for the barrier and foundation design, and the overall deflection of the system. Using the loads, the researcher team will develop detailed design and reinforcement details of the three selected foundations along with the 54-inch tall single slope barrier. The researcher team will construct the barrier and foundation system that has shown the largest deflection in the simulations, and perform Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) Test Level-5 (TL-5) testing to verify performance of the system. The researcher team will use test and simulation results to determine the minimum offset needed behind the barrier where a column can be located to avoid vehicle impact.
