Personal Warning Sensor for Road Construction Workers

Oldcastle Materials, Inc. (herein referred to as "Oldcastle") has teamed with a subcontractor from the US defense industry to develop a state-of-the-art work zone intrusion and worker alarm system to deploy within its work crews nationally, including those in Minnesota. The system, named AWARE, is a portable work-vehicle-based technology that can intelligently detect and track potential vehicle intrusion threats as well as worker locations in the work zone. If an intrusion has occurred or is imminent, workers who are at risk are alerted via a small device worn in the hardhat, in the vest, or as an armband. The device, named "Worktrax," provides haptic and auditory alerts of an impending intrusion. The Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) has assisted Oldcastle with testing of the AWARE system, and has developed a good understanding of its capabilities. The system itself collects a wealth of data (snapshots of video collected by the system, approach vehicle speed and trajectories, warnings, etc.) that can be used to assess the frequency of intrusions actually occurring at work sites, the warnings generated by the system, and the outcomes of those warnings. Oldcastle has offered to provide data from the system when actually used with their Minnesota work crews during various work zone operations. The objective of the proposed research would be to provide MnDOT with actual information on work zone intrusion rates and characteristics as well as an assessment of the potential worker and motorist safety benefits of this technology.
