National Roadside Study of Alcohol and Drug Use by Drivers (2013-2014)

Since 1973 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has periodically sponsored national surveys of United States (U.S.) drivers to estimate the prevalence of drinking and driving. The fourth survey, conducted in 2007, included a verbal survey and breath sample as did previous studies but added the collection of oral fluid and blood to determine the presence of other drugs in the driving population. This fifth National Roadside Study of Alcohol and Drug Use by Drivers replicates the basic methodology used in the 2007 survey with protocol updates that include recent technological advancements and incorporate lessons learned. The objective of this study is to estimate the prevalence of alcohol and other drugs in drivers across the country and to determine how this prevalence has changed over time. Researchers interviewed more than 11,000 drivers in 2013 and 2014 to determine their alcohol concentrations and identify the presence of various over-the-counter, prescription, and illegal drugs in their systems. All interactions with subjects were voluntary and anonymous. Data includes self-reported information, breath samples, oral fluid samples, and blood samples. The goal for each of the 60 sites was 125 oral fluid samples. Each site included 5 different locations, for a total of 300 locations.
