Educational and Workforce Development through Creation of Programs in Transportation to Generate Future Careers for Our Students in Navajo Nation Region
The aim of this proposal is to train Native American students in transportation-related industries at all of region 6 partner universities, colleges, and schools. The program is designed to support Native American students from high school to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) undergraduate students. It has four main components: (1) Provide paid summer internships to the qualified and interested students in the field of transportation industries to participate in research summer internship programs at Louisiana State University (LSU) or other partner members of the consortium organizations. (2) Direct the students to the transportation-related workshops and seminars conducting at the partnering institutions that are providing the necessary background in transportation fields and preparing the students for internships as well as providing a bridge from Navajo Tech University (NTU) to their transportation programs; (3) Analyze the causes of workforce shortages in the transportation industry. (4) Create and offer transportation certificate programs at NTU to train and expose the Native American students in transportation fields; This will encourage the students to choose a transportation discipline when applying for college. The above components will be incorporated into the existing program at NTU. The program will develop on-line courses that would be provided for free to the Native American universities across the nation and therefore, will make this program sustainable. The partnership between Navajo and the Transportation Consortium of South-Central States (Tran-SET) regional center will help expose students including those from underrepresented groups to the most technically-advanced Material research laboratories in Region 6 as well as state-of-the-art facilities at all partner universities.
