Research for the AASHTO Standing Committee on Public Transportation. Task 68. Successful Mobility Management Practices for Improving Transportation Services in Small Urban and Rural Areas

Across the nation, increased emphasis has been placed on the role of mobility management in improving community transportation services. Mobility management is often defined as a strategic approach to service coordination and customer service that improves efficiencies and increases transportation options to meet the needs of the customers. Research is needed to assist a variety of public transportation service providers with identifying customer travel needs and coordination of public transportation in rural and small urban areas. The objective of this research is to identify and analyze mobility management best practices that have been successfully implemented in rural and small urban areas. The focus will be on examining a variety of approaches and strategies that offer some potential models that can be considered and replicated by State DOT’s and their sub-recipients across a range of environments.
