Bridge Load Posting Based on Actual Arkansas Truck Traffic

The objectives of this study include reviewing and updating current truck types used in Arkansas, grouping trucks according to axle configuration and gross vehicle weight, and recommending a set of vehicles types, configurations, and weights that should be used by the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department in it's bridge load posting analysis. A classification scheme will be developed to minimize the total number of truck classes for sign posting purposes and use axle weight and axle configuration as inputs. The Department will provide weigh-in-motion (WIM) data which the researchers will filter to develop unique (representative) trucks for each of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) truck classes. Next, bridge response will be determined as a function of each of the FHWA truck classes pertinent to this study. Bridge response as a function of moment and shear will be evaluated considering multiple span configurations and span lengths. Bridge response due to actual truck traffic will then be compared with the bridge response attained considering the current ARDOT load posting truck family. In cases where bridge response due to actual truck traffic exceeds the maximum bridge response developed from the ARDOT truck family will be highlighted in the project’s final report.
