Law Enforcement Survey: Attitudes and Behavior Toward Traffic Safety

With the help and cooperation of partners in law enforcement, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA’s) work over the past decades has significantly improved law enforcement strategies and traffic safety. However, continued effort is crucial to extending and maintaining these improvements. The purpose of this study is to collect a scientifically sound sample of Law Enforcement Officers' (LEOs') and Agencies' (LEAs’) attitudes towards traffic safety enforcement and determine how those attitudes vary as a function of having a dedicated traffic safety division and LEO sub-population. More specifically, the project will (1) identify current and past attitudes, as well as expectations for the future, held within the law enforcement community towards traffic safety law enforcement, (2) determine the strengths/weaknesses associated with merging traffic enforcement with other enforcement divisions, and (3) assess key variables that have implications for intervention and outreach activities This project will involve a mixed-mode survey of LEOs and LEAs. This information will be used by NHTSA and its traffic safety partners to help shape strategies for coordinating and promoting activities with LEOs and LEAs.
