Social Media Scan

The study will research how State Highway Offices (SHOs) and other groups associated with public and highway safety are using social media, and the opportunities, benefits, and challenges social media presents. The Volpe Center is supporting National Highway Transit Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Governor’s Highway Safety Association (GHSA) in their efforts to understand social media’s evolving role in highway safety through an informative review that includes qualitative and quantitative scans of States' social media platforms as well as interviews with nine States, to collect, analyze and share insights on how State agencies use social media to promote safety. The information will be used by States to: better understand, compare and contrast how social media functions across states and other SHOs; the evolving opportunities and concerns that social media poses; and related ways to best improve safety and justify funding requests.
