Selective Testing of Registered Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) for Compliance

The goal of this project was to selectively test registered and certified ELDs to confirm their compliance with the technical requirements of the ELD final rule. This effort supported Enforcement and Field Offices that requested the verification of in-use ELDs.

    • On December 16, 2015, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) published the final rule entitled “Electronic Logging Devices and Hours of Service Supporting Documents” also known as the ELD rule. The rule is available on the FMCSA Web site. This rule establishes: (1) Requirements for the mandatory use of ELDs by certain drivers required to prepare HOS records of duty status (RODS). (2) Minimum performance and design standards for ELDs that will require certification and registration with FMCSA. (3) Requirements for HOS supporting documents. (4) Measures to address concerns about harassment resulting from the mandatory use of ELDs.
