Continued Updating the Lane Closure Guide for Urban Highways in Kansas
The primary objective of this research project is to understand and make possible recommendations for the capacity required of the Work Zone Lane Closure Guidance chart used by the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and design engineers for work zones in Kansas. Additionally, further understanding of how work zone capacity relates to crash experience before or within the work zone is critical to improving safety on Kansas Interstates. The research project will be guided by historical work zone information and geometry as well as historical operational and weather data provided by KC Scout and WHICHway traffic operation centers. The research team hope the data collected will be able to provide insight into this value and work with KDOT to determine if an adjustment is needed in the chart to provide more efficient operations and safer work zones.
