Motivations for Speeding – Additional Analyses

The recently completed National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) project, Motivations for Speeding, provided some important new insights into speeding behavior, such as identifying four basic speeding types as well as a better understanding of the complexity of speeding behavior. This understanding included the variation of speeding patterns across different roadway types and, in some speed limit ranges, some of which were significantly associated with psychological factors. This new project will further develop this data set and conduct additional analyses to expand upon the information already generated from this data set. First, a new data set could be created that focused on speeding episodes that track from the time the driver first exceeds the speed limit to the time they drop below the speeding threshold. This could be used to examine driver speeding strategies and may also allow an examination of the relationship between speeding and other risky behaviors. Second, additional analyses would allow a more close examination of the relationship between speeding and situational factors, such as leaving home late for work.
