Development of Performance-Based Seismic Design Guidance for Ordinary Bridges

Performance-based seismic design has now emerged as the most advanced methodology to design new and assess existing structures. It integrates site specific seismic hazard analysis, structural demand analysis, fragility analysis and loss analysis in a comprehensive and consistent probabilistic framework. This methodology has been extensively developed under the auspice of the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research (PEER) Center over the last fifteen years, but mainly for analysis/assessment and not for design except for some initial efforts (Jalayer and Cornell 2003, Mackie and Stojadinovic 2007).
